Cheltenham Primary School

Our website is currently under construction and will be launched early in 2010.

WE ARE THE 5TH OLDEST SCHOOL IN VICTORIA.

WE ARE CONTINUING TO PROVIDE OUTSTANDING EDUCATION FOR OUR STUDENTS.

Cheltenham Primary School is located 15 kms. south east of Melbourne. It is bordered by golf courses, Port Phillip Bay and Southland Shopping Centre. Our school has an interesting and significant history, having been established in 1855.

The school's grounds are spacious including ovals, asphalt courts, synthigrass netball courts and our own Native Plant Sanctuary. This area forms part of the Cheltenham Heathland and contains a number of important native plants, grasses and orchids. We also have a vegetable garden and other landscaped garden areas. In 1998 we received a Commendation in the Victorian School Gardens Awards and in 2000 and 2001 we were awarded the Bayside Council's Proud School Award. In 2003, our community upgraded the Vegetable Garden to include beds for strawberries, beans, tomatoes, compatible planting experimental area and several vegies and an orchard. We also developed  the 'Robyn Miller Community Centre' where the children enjoy performing, rehearsing and learning music.

Frequent visitors to the school grounds after dark are the possums. They reside in the golf course and the sanctuary. The possum is displayed on our school logo. We have used it to assist you in navigating your way around our web site - everywhere you see the possum, it will take you back to our Home Page.

There are currently more than 350  students at the school, ranging in age from 5 years old (Grade Prep) to 12 years old (Grade 6), with an average class size of 23 students. Classes are either straight grades or composite grades, enabling children to develop at a rate which suits their capabilities and learn from their peers. In addition to the Grade teachers, Cheltenham Primary also employs specialist teaching staff in areas such as Japanese, Physical Education, Art, Music, Library, Literacy Support, Reading Recovery, ESL and Computer Education. Activities we have recently undertaken include:

- Artist-In-Residence,  Writer-in-Residence program, Scientist in Residence
- Perceptual Motor Skills (developing physical co-ordination)
- Early Years of Schooling, Middle Years of Schooling, Literacy and Numeracy Support Programs
- Tournament of the Minds - an extension activity for talented students
- Concert band, choirs, performance program
