SCHOOL MUSICAL
Congratulations to everyone involved in the musical Kids In Space. We had an opportunity to see all our children display their talents in song, dance and instrumental items over several performances. It was an excellent display. Thanks to all specialist and grade teachers, parents and, of course our students. Thanks also to Sandringham Secondary College for the use of their hall. The lighting and sound effects were sensational.

OLYMPIC TORCH VISITS CHELTENHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL
The Olympic Torch visited our school early in July on it's way around Australia. We heard about the history of the torch and all the exciting places it was going to visit prior to the Opening Ceremony. Each grade and teacher had their photo taken with the torch and all the teachers have their photos in the foyer of the school.
PROJECTS
At Cheltenham we are constantly involved in a range of projects that enhance the multi-age working between grades and increase co-operative work with other schools. This page shows some of the projects we have undertaken.

The travel buddy initiative is a collaborative project involving two international classrooms for a term or semester. Occasionally, the collaboration between these grades runs for the whole school year. The focus of the project centres around communication and an exchange of information between the participating grades via e-mail, digital photos and other visual and written media on a regular basis. As well as the regular and ongoing communications between students and teachers, soft toys are exchanged between the schools for a period of time to further strengthen the links established between buddy grades. Many grades have has established links with Roosevelt Elementary School in New Jersey, United States of America and Hillsmeade Primary School in Narre Warren South, Victoria. Both of these travel buddy exchanges are providing enriched learning experiences for students to broaden their horizons within the global world.

SCIENTIST IN RESIDENCE
Cheltenham Primary School was successful in hosting the Scientist in Schools Project. Our Scientist Marcus Robertson has been working with our students on the Science behind the Olympic Games. We will be hosting a "Who wants to be a Science Millionaire?" Competition as the final activity for this project. The senior grades will also be involved in an Olympic/Science Trivia Competition in term 4.
THAI VISIT
Our school has had a very special visit from delegates from Thailand. These visitors enjoyed looking around our school particularly at our Safe Routes to School Program, Bike Education program, Safety at School program, Early Years Literacy and Learning Technologies Programs. They were very impressed with the programs and the documentation and assessment procedures.
VISIT BY THE HON. JEFF KENNETT, PREMIER OF VICTORIA
On 16th June, 1999, Cheltenham Primary School was visited by the Victorian State Premier, Jeff Kennett. Mr Kennett toured the school, visiting classes at work and chatting to the children about what they were doing. Grade 4/5B were in the computer room, and showed the Premier the work they have been doing in following Jesse Martin's solo voyage around the world. He particularly asked that 4/5B send Jesse an e-mail telling him that Mr Kennett is looking forward to meeting him on his return.
He then moved on to Grade 1/2B and was introduced to Westy Bear. The Premier told the children about his own teddy bear, Jacko, and presented Westy with a gold Victoria lapel pin.

Next it was on to P/1E to listen to a German song, then P/1D to see the Early Years Literacy program in use. Finally, the Premier addressed a special school assembly, to hear our School Song and then answer some questions from the children. The Premier then presented the school with a Victorian State Flag.

CITY PRIDE AWARD
In 2000, our school was selected once again to represent the city of Bayside in the Proud Schools Awards.
On Monday 14th December, our normal school assembly became a special occasion when we were visited by the Mayor of Bayside, Alex del Porto. The Mayor was there to present the school with its award as a finalist in this year's City Pride Awards. We were one of only 3 schools that made the finals! The picture below shows our Principal, Robyn Miller, receiving the plaque from the Mayor.

INSTRUMENTAL SOIREE
The inaugural Cheltenham Primary Instrumental Musical Soiree is held in December. This gives all our of talented young musicians, from Preps to Grade 6, the chance to showcase their musical abilities before family and friends. Items include guitar, keyboard, violin, recorder, wind and percussion, plus the Concert Band. A night not to be missed.
FENCE FACE-LIFT
The murals on the front fence in Charman Road have been designed and painted by each grade of the school - and each one has a hidden signature showing which grade painted which mural. They depict different environments in Australia. So, next time you drive by, stop and take a look at what we are doing with Visual Arts. These have recently been moved to the oval fences due to our upgrade of the front fence.
