NATIVE PLANT SANCTUARY
The school has a Native Plant
Sanctuary which is one of the few remnants of the once extensive
Cheltenham
Heathland. With the assistance of Greening
Australia
, we have laid a number of paths that meander through the sanctuary so we don't
accidentally walk on the native grasses and greenhood orchids that grow there.
The area provides many learning opportunities in Environmental science and is a
great place for quiet, reflective times. Each year students plant a selection of
locally grown indigenous species, under the expert guidance of Bayside
Council’s bushland crew.
Winter and spring are the most colourful times. The traditional bright
yellow of the wattles contrasts beautifully with the grey-greens and
of the manna gums and the red correa bells. The tea-tree then produce
their delicate white flowers that often lasts until the chocolate and flax
lilies bloom in late spring.
In
summer, the sanctuary is a cool and shady retreat, when walkers are rewarded by
the site of the flowering kangaroo apple and sweet bursaria bushes. The school
community has a Friends Group, as well as a Grounds’ committee, which helps
maintain the Sanctuary, and assists with guided tours on the Sanctuary Open
Days.
